To select the proper pollinizer for Japanese plum cultivars, flowering times, number of anthers and pollen grains per flower, and percentage of pollen germination of 7 cultivars were investigated. Self- and cross-compatibility of plum cultivars by controlled pollination were also examined at the National Horticultural Research Institute in Suwon. Full blooming dates were mostly from April 16 to April 18, revealing a good time-correspondence among them. ¢¥Soldam¢¥ and ¢¥White Plum¢¥ had more anthers and pollen grains per flower than other cultivars. However, percentage of pollen germination was high in ¢¥Formosa¢¥ and ¢¥Santa Rosa¢¥. Self-compatibility in Japanese type plum cultivars was lower than 2%, while their cross-compatibility was mostly high except that cross-compatibility of ¢¥Santa Rosa¢¥ with other cultivars was lower than 7%. Therefore, the suitable pollinizer for ¢¥Oishiwase¢¥, ¢¥Soldam¢¥, and ¢¥White Plum¢¥ was ¢¥Santa Rosa¢¥, while ¢¥Beniryozen¢¥ was the most suitable pollinizer for ¢¥Formosa¢¥.
